Diploma in
Telemedicine
Course Description :
E-health
relates to application of Information and Communication
technology in healthcare which has wider ramifications e.g.
Telemedicine, Electronic Medical Record ( EMR), Hospital
Information Management System ( HIMS), Picture Archival
Communication System ( PACS) etc. This is an emerging area
of application of Information & Communication Technology
in health sector. Telemedicine is a bright example of fusion
of information and communication and health sciences having
great potential to meet access to expert’s advice from a
distance in a resource crunch environment, remote care
delivery, distance education & skill development of
healthcare professionals resulting in improvement of health
system. In India, telemedicine is being adopted by many
large hospitals in both public and private sectors.
Telemedicine infrastructure has also been developed in
district and medical college level hospitals across the
country. Government of India is also promoting adoption of
telemedicine into existing healthcare delivery system which
is evident from budget allocation during the 11th Five Year
Plan period. It has also constituted a National Task Force
for Telemedicine in the year 2005 to address various issues
like technology, standard, application to improve rural
healthcare, e-CME etc. Department of Information Technology,
Ministry of Communication & IT and Department of Space (
ISRO) are also engaged in R&D and application related
projects. World Health Organization is also promoting
adoption of ICT in health sector and has laid down
telemedicine in his district facilities guidelines. As a
result, Health Information Technology is rapidly emerging as
a distinct discipline in it’s own merit. However, there is
great challenge in development of human resources in this
field. In the near future there is going to immense
requirement of trained professionals with rapid deployment
of Hospital Management System, Telemedicine, Picture
Archival Communication Systems etc. in healthcare
environment. Already, many medical institutions having
telemedicine & e health infrastructure are finding it
difficult to recruit personnel with necessary blend of
technical, medical and managerial skills.
Course Objectives
:
The programme's
primary objective is to provide health staff and
technologists with further education in telemedicine and
e-health, a discipline that, strictly speaking, concerns
medical practice over distance using modern communications
technology. The programme will be based on a somewhat
broader definition, covering ICT processes and systems that
support various other health services, including those that
patients can use directly. The “Technology” field of study
focuses on various aspects in the construction of
telemedicine and e-health systems, while the “health” field
of study focuses on methodological and technological
prerequisites and the associated social and organizational
processes.
